Cooperative Light & Power

One of Great River Energy’s northernmost member-owners, Cooperative Light & Power (CLP), provides critical energy during long winters. Although it’s cold outside, CLP continues to serve and invest in its local community.

Employees give more than 2,000 volunteer hours each year serving local organizations such as the Lake County Humane Society, Two Harbors Youth Hockey, Two Harbors Agate Sports, local churches, the hospital, Scouts, the Two Harbors Chamber of Commerce, the American Legion and the North Shore Rotary Club. Every year, the co-op distributes $30,000 in grants to community projects through its Operation Round Up program.

CLP’s largest consumer is Louisiana Pacific Corporation, a U.S. building materials company headquartered in Nashville, Tenn. It is the world’s largest producer of oriented strand board and engineered wood building products. Its Two Harbors, Minn., plant is only one of nine in the world that makes the company’s SmartSide product.

CLP is also active in economic development. The co-op has a revolving loan program that attracts new and existing businesses to the communities it serves.

Living up to the “cooperation among cooperatives” principle, Great River Energy employees work with each of its member-owners to provide solutions to issues and collaborate on projects. Together, Great River Energy and CLP have installed a 28-kilowatt community solar garden, and have also worked together to install electric vehicle charging stations in two of Minnesota’s state parks.
