Great River Energy supports carbon dioxide reduction measures

Cooperatives work for the sustainable development of their communities through policies supported by members. Our founding principles emphasize the importance of environmental stewardship, supporting our communities, and providing reliable and affordable power. Through environmental stewardship, we are working on significant carbon dioxide reduction measures with a goal of more than doubling renewable energy usage.

We’re taking action for carbon dioxide reduction

We anticipate that the majority of our retail sales will be provided by a 90% carbon-free power supply by 2035. This is in alignment with the Minnesota carbon-free standard. Our plan has three components to keep our portfolio balanced and cost-effective: wind power purchase agreements, peaking generation, and capacity and energy hedge contracts. We’ve been planning and executing the transition of our power supply portfolio for more than a decade, and we’re confident we’ll continue to meet and exceed our goals.
