Electric cooperatives do not operate in the way a traditional utility company functions. Energy cooperatives are member-owned organizations that provide energy services to their communities. They are focused on delivering affordable, reliable and sustainable energy to their communities.

What do electric cooperatives do for members?

Unlike traditional energy and utility companies, energy cooperatives operate as not-for-profit organizations where members have a say in decision-making processes to ensure that operations align with the needs and values of their communities. By pooling resources and sharing ownership, co-ops are able to lower energy costs, improve energy security and enhance local economic development.

Great River Energy’s member-owner co-ops provide electricity services to 60% of Minnesota. We also provide economic development expertise and do our best to connect businesses with the resources they need to learn and grow in our region.
