Vermillion Gold seeks additional state mineral leases in Itasca County

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources on Tuesday announced it was recommending the Minnesota Executive Council — made up of the governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, state auditor and attorney general — approve the mineral exploration company's request for the four additional leases at the council's Feb. 26 meeting.

The company's request for leases is far less than its original application in 2017 when it asked for 25 mineral leases in Itasca and St. Louis counties covering almost 11,500 acres. The DNR on Tuesday said Vermillion Gold had "amended its lease request to substantially reduce its size."
