A shipyard in the Duluth-Superior harbor is about to become the proving ground for an ambitious bet: that the know-how behind the world’s largest shipbuilder can be transplanted, piece by piece, into the aging yards of the American Great Lakes.
Fraser Industries LLC has signed a memorandum of understanding with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering — the intermediate holding company overseeing the shipbuilding arm of South Korea’s HD Hyundai group — to modernize U.S. shipyards from the ground up. The agreement, signed at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. on July 29, names Fraser Shipyards as the demonstration site for the effort, with a formal consulting contract expected to follow later this year.
