Fabricator forges success via diverse industries

More than 75% of manufacturing companies in the United States are small, with fewer than 20 employees, according to the Small Business Administration. Yet, in all of the political discussions nationally about relocating manufacturing operations from China and other locations back to the United States, what’s often overlooked are the stories of these small manufacturing companies already successfully operating within U.S. borders.
Over the past five years, the number of manufacturing businesses in the United States has grown by 13 percent, with small businesses leading the charge, according to industry sources. As one source put it, “Manufacturing isn’t just for large businesses.”
Two Harbors-based Northshore Steel serves as a case in point. Operating from a manufacturing plant of about 18,600 square feet and an outbuilding of about 1,800 square feet in the city’s industrial park, the steel and metal fabricating enterprise marked 60 years in business last year, owned all of that time by the same family.
