For years, Great River Energy and our member electric cooperatives have invested in major industry initiatives, demonstrating new technologies and educating members and stakeholders through pilot projects. We recognized the growing momentum for the electrification of Minnesota’s economy several years ago and developed Revolt™.

Great River Energy electric cooperatives offer renewable energy credits for electric vehicle usage

With the help of our members, we created a program that is doing something no energy provider has ever done: powering electric vehicles (EV) with 100% wind energy. But how do you know that your electricity is coming from wind power? Here is the gist:

We get energy from all kinds of sources: wind, natural gas, solar, hydroelectric, coal, etc. Though you can’t tell the difference once the power hits the grid, there are things called “renewable energy certificates” (RECs). These can be referred to as the currency of the renewable energy market. They are numbered and registered to guarantee that the power generated is from a renewable source, in the Revolt program’s case, wind power. The Revolt program dedicates RECs on your behalf, completely offsetting the energy you use to power your EV.

You still have to pay for this energy, but you’ll be able to do so knowing that when you go electric, you’re going green.

You can learn more about the Revolt program here. And if you’re curious about other industry initiatives we’re investing in, click here.
