Priming 20 acres for potential industrial development

The Aitkin Action Alliance met on Feb. 14. Industrial Park Committee member Ross Wagner reported to the group that Aitkin County recently approved the land transfer for over 200 acres along the Mississippi River.

Aitkin County Growth will retain 20 acres from the sale, and will use proceeds from the sale of 207.5 acres for site development through Minnesota DEED Shovel Ready program.

Shovel Ready refers to commercial and industrial sites that have had all of the planning, zoning, surveys, title work, environmental studies, soils analysis and public infrastructure engineering completed prior to putting the site up for sale.

The Shovel Ready program will cost $3,250. If awarded, an EDAM grant may cover $2,000 of the cost.

Since there is little industrial land available in the county, Chair Jeanie Collins added, “It is really crucial to have sites ready. Companies won’t wait.”
