Shamrock Township Broadband Expansion

There are 374 households near Big Sandy Lake in Aitkin County that will benefit from a recently awarded grant which will increase broadband access in the underserved area.

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development announced on Nov. 21 that $26 million in grants were awarded to bring broadband access to unserved and underserved parts of the state.

An unserved area is where households or businesses lack access to wire-line broadband service at speeds that meet the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) threshold of 25 megabits per second (mbps) download and 3 mbps upload.

An underserved area is where households or businesses do receive service above the FCC threshold but lack access to wire-line broadband service at speeds 100 mbps download and 20 mbps upload.

Savage Communications Inc (SCI). was one of 39 Border-to-Border Broadband Development Grant Program recipients. SCI received a grant for $148,503 for a project which will serve the Big Sandy Lake area.
