The New Ulm Area Chamber of Commerce has named New Ulm Medical Center the 2017 Business of the Year. A banquet to celebrate this distinction was held on November 14th at the New Ulm Event Center.

Healthcare in New Ulm can trace its long, rich heritage back to 1883 when Father Alexander Berghold founded the St. Alexander Hospital. After many changes over the next 100+ year, in 1996 Sioux Valley Hospital and New Ulm Medical Clinic merged to become New Ulm Medical Center. Today, the medical center includes a multi-specialty clinic located at the north end of the building, as well as a retail pharmacy and optical shop. New Ulm Medical Center opened its first satellite clinic – The Winthrop Area Clinic – in 2007. New Ulm Medical Center has been recognized nationally for innovation, patient care, patient safety, patient satisfaction and more.

Every year since 1974, the New Ulm Area Chamber of Commerce Board chooses an industry or business that embodies the heart, spirit, and best of the New Ulm business community. A variety of businesses and industries have received this award. In 1974, August Schell Brewing Co. was the first recipient. The Industry/Business of the Year designation is awarded to a business or industry based on three areas: economic impact in New Ulm, years of business in New Ulm or as Chamber Members, and chamber & community involvement. Factors considered include: leadership in the industry, job creation, employees that have served on Chamber boards and committees, and community leadership.
