Data centers are expected to double in number by 2021 and it is poised to be one of the largest energy consumers in the near future. The industry is leading the shift to renewable energy to power the internet economy and address climate risk. As a result, more utilities have begun to offer data-center operators access to large-scale renewable energy, adding another milestone to the initiative in achieving sustainable economic development. It emphasizes the need to utilize renewable energy to power data centers, in order to reduce the environmental footprint.
